Where do you start with Nick Foles’ performance in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 38-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game?
The backup quarterback, who stepped in for the injured Carson Wentz in Week 14, threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns to put the Eagles into Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, and he made history in the process.
Here’s a quick rundown of what Foles accomplished Sunday night.
Foles became the only quarterback in NFL history with a passer rating of 100 in his first three career playoff games, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Reuban Frank.
The NFC Championship Game was Foles’ third career playoff game with the Eagles. He started the team’s wild-card loss to the New Orleans Saints in 2013 and the wins over the Atlanta Falcons and Vikings the past two weeks.
The Eagles lost that first game to the Saints on a late field goal, but Foles finished with a passer rating of 105.0 after he went 23 of 33 for 195 yards, two scores and no interceptions. In the NFC divisional round against the Falcons, Foles was 23 of 30 with no touchdowns or interceptions, and his pass rating checked in at 100.1. Sunday, it was 141.4.
Foles has the highest career completion percentage and highest career passer rating in the postseason for players with a minimum of 50 attempts, according to Frank.
For his career, Foles has completed exactly 75 percent of his passes in the postseason — he’s 72 of 96 — and his passer rating is at 116.4. Foles’ efficiency and care puts him at the top of these lists. His lowest completion percentage in his three postseason appearances was his 69.7 mark against the Saints, and he’s never thrown an interception in the postseason.
Foles joins Joe Montana as the only players to complete 75 percent of their passes in back-to-back postseason games, according to Elias Sports.
In the 1989 postseason with the San Francisco 49ers, Montana completed 86.7 percent of his passes in the NFC Championship Game and followed it by completing 75.9 percent of his passes in the Super Bowl. Montana threw seven touchdowns and no interceptions in those two games, which the 49ers won by a combined 85-13. Foles is in good company.
On the whole, Montana completed 65 of 83 passes (78.3 percent) for 800 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions in leading the 49ers to a 55-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.
The downfield passing game seemed to disappear with Foles under center after Wentz’s injury, but it reappeared at the most crucial time. Foles threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery late in the first half and followed it up with a 41-yard touchdown to Torrey Smith early in the second half. He also connected with Nelson Agholor for a 42-yard gain. Foles didn’t have a completion greater than 40 yards this season entering Sunday.
For good measure, Foles also connected with tight end Zach Ertz for a 36-yard gain, and he averaged more than 10 yards per attempt.
Overall, Foles added to his impressive resume.
Take a look at what Foles has accomplished despite starting 10 or more games in a season only twice and playing in only three playoff games.
For the Eagles as a whole, Sunday night’s 31-point margin of victory was the largest in team history for a postseason game, beating out a 31-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2001 wild-card round. The Eagles’ 38 points are the most that were scored against the NFL’s top scoring defense since the Patriots scored 41 points on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2004 AFC Championship Game.
